Beyond the Pew: Understanding True Faith and What It Means to Be a Christian

Church attendance is often seen as a clear sign of faith. Many believe that sitting in a pew every Sunday automatically makes someone a Christian. But is that really true? The Bible teaches us that being a Christian goes far beyond just showing up to church. True faith is a matter of the heart, a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and a life transformed by His grace. Hell is full of people who sat in church their whole life... but missed the Savior.

Church Attendance Will Not Get You to Heaven

Many people equate going to church with being a Christian. While church is important for fellowship, worship, and learning, attendance alone does not guarantee salvation or a genuine relationship with God. Jesus warned us about this in the book of Matthew

Matthew 7:21 -"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

This verse makes it clear that there are people that go through the motions of a Christian life, but aren't even saved. Calling Jesus "Lord" or even participating in religious activities does not make someone a Christian. When someone believes that church attendance will get them into heaven, they are trusting in a work-based salvation. Good works are a product of salvation, but they are not a preceding requirement for salvation.

True Christianity Is About a Changed Heart

The Bible emphasizes that true faith results in a transformed life. It is not about outward appearances or rituals but about inward change. When someone gets saved, they should desire to change their life. Not in order to be saved, but because they are saved. We shouldn't want to listen, watch, and participate in the same things we used to. The old creature has passed away... all things should become new.

Ezekiel 36:26 -"A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh."

This new heart is sensitive to God’s guidance and desires to follow Him. It is evidence of true conversion, not just religious attendance. We don't go to church in order to be saved. We go to church because that's where saved people gather to corporately worship God.

Jesus Saves

Salvation Requires Repentance and Belief

Being a Christian means turning away from whatever you are relying on for your salvation and trusting in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Jesus is not a way to heaven, he is the only way to heaven. For some, they are repenting of their idol worship and turning to Jesus. For others, they are repenting of their work-based salvation and placing their full faith in Him. No matter your background, salvation is obtained the same way for everyone.

Mark 1:15 - "And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”

In order to be saved, we must repent of our current belief system, and turn to Jesus. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Salvation is found in no other.

The Role of Good Works in True Faith

The Bible teaches that good works flow from faith but do not save us. We don't read our Bible, go to church, pray, and give to God in an effort to be saved. We do these things because we are born again and the new creature desires to do the things of God. Good works are the fruit of faith, not the root. A Christian’s life will show evidence of faith through actions, but those actions come after a genuine belief in Christ.

James 2:18 - "Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.”

Hypocrites in church

The Danger of Hypocrisy in Religion

Jesus often criticized the religious leaders of His day for their hypocrisy. They appeared righteous outwardly but were far from God in their hearts. This warning applies to anyone who relies on church attendance or religious acts without true faith. Instead of worrying about our outward appearance, we should focus on our inward condition. Once our inward condition is where it needs to be, our outward appearance will follow suit.

Matthew 23:27-28 - "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity."

Practical Steps to Grow in True Faith

If you've never placed your faith in Jesus for your salvation, I strongly encourage your to do so. He is the Son of God and he died on the cross for your sins. God's free gift of salvation is available for you. If you are already saved and want to move beyond just attending church and actually grow in your faith, consider these steps:

  • Pray regularly: Talk to God honestly and listen for His guidance.

  • Read the Bible daily: Let God’s Word shape your thoughts and actions.

  • Confess and repent of sin: Keep your heart clean before God.

  • Serve others: Faith grows when we love and help those around us.

  • Give to God: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

These actions help deepen your relationship with Christ beyond the pew.
